Health and the Role of Chiropractic

To many people, Chiropractic is a new experience.  I would like to give those individuals a brief introduction explaining the role of chiropractic in the health care industry.

What is Chiropractic?

Chiropractic is a branch of the healing arts that aims to restore and maintain health of an individual.  The primary mode of treatment is called a manipulation or adjustment.  This involves a hands on approach primarily to the spinal region.

What Training Does a Chiropractic Doctor Receive?

A Chiropractor is a licensed practitioner who has studied a minimum of seven years at university and chiropractic college.   The fields of study that a student concentrates on are:  anatomy, physiology, pathology, neurology, biomechanics, radiology (xray), and spinal adjustive techniques.  The final year of study involves completing an internship where they receive supervised training and the clinical “hands-on” skills required to practice chiropractic.  Upon receiving their Doctor of Chiropractic (D.C.) degree, students must then pass a series of National License Exams and Provincial Licensing exams before they can start a practice.  To maintain their licenses, chiropractors in B.C. are required to participate in approved continuing education programs. The B.C. College of Chiropractors monitors the licensing, conduct and competence of British Columbia’s chiropractic doctors.

What Can I Expect at My First Office Visit?

It is the duty of your chiropractor to do the following:

1. A CASE HISTORY:  a thorough review of your specific problem, relevant past
history, and your overall health.

2. AN EXAMINATION:  the physical tests and movements that you are asked to do to help identify the problem.

3. AN X-RAY:  refer you to your family physician if required.

4. A DIAGNOSIS:  the definition of your problem which helps to make certain choices clear.  Is this a chiropractic problem?  If not, a suitable referral will be done.  If it is, a plan of treatment will be communicated.

5. A PROGNOSIS:  the estimate of how your problem, once diagnosed and considered in the context of your general health habits, occupation, stress and activity levels will respond to chiropractic care.  Your response to treatment will be monitored by your chiropractor, who will be looking for an improvement to your specific condition, as well as for changes in your overall health.  Two of the basic components of chiropractic care are wellness and prevention.  Utilization of exercise, nutrition, and lifestyle modification may suggested to improve your overall well-being and promote active, patient-centered care.

Do I Require a Doctor’s Referral to See a Chiropractor?

No referrals are not necessary.  The Chiropractor is licensed as a primary contact health care practitioner.   We are well trained in diagnosis and can decide if chiropractic care is required for your condition.  If we decide that chiropractic would not benefit your situation we inform you and make recommendations to you so you can receive the proper treatment.

Is the Visit Covered by MSP, WCB, OR ICBC?

No, this clinic no longer accepts ICBC or WCB claims.

How do I know if I am a Candidate for Chiropractic?

The majority of patients that seek chiropractic care suffer from health problems that can often be traced to the spine such as  back pain, neck pain, rib neuralgias, and headaches.  However, we are trained to care for all joints of the body thus we are not just restricted to the spine.  Some of the other common ailments that chiropractors treat are:  TMJ dysfunction, Carpal tunnel syndrome, and plantar fascitis.  If you have any concerns regarding your condition and the role of chiropractic please feel free to contact a chiropractic doctor in your area.

In closing, I hope that I have been able to answer some of your questions regarding the role of chiropractic in the health care industry.  Please feel free to contact a chiropractic doctor in your area if you have any further questions.  Good health, happiness and wellness to you!
